Adventures in AR: Meet the Knight
Originally, I planned to do one big post where I went through each of the planned characters for ARventure and detailed the role they would play in the game. It would be a while until I could do such a post, though, because I don't have all the characters planned out. I was never into Team Fortress, but I always loved their "Meet the Team" videos. That gave me the idea to give each character their own shorter post where I can go into more detail about them. And besides, by covering each character individually, I can really pad out my daily posts!
As you may expect, the usual 'in development' disclaimers apply. Nothing is final; everything is a work in progress. I'm also not a particularly experience artist, so things may look a little scruffy.
Now, without further ado, let's meet our first character:
The knight was the first character I planned out for the game. I actually made his artwork before I even wrote any code or had a solid plan for the game. In a way, he kick started the entire project. He will be one of the primary NPC quest givers the player will encounter.
Quests given by the knight will typically deal with menial tasks that are beneath him. He will basically shirk his own responsibilities by passing them off to the player, whom he will declare his squire (with or without their consent). The specific tasks he will provide will largely depend on what sort of encounter system(s) I create for quests. Ideally his quest will be combat oriented, such as 'clearing out' crypts or dungeons. Though I do have some non-combat quests in mind, such as retracing his steps through a booze cruise to recover his 17th favorite sword, which he misplaced.
Since the knight's quests will be combat oriented, most of the rewards will be earned during the quest itself. The knight will provide paltry payment for the player's hard work, though he may give decent rewards for tasks 'of the utmost importance.' My goal for this character and his quest rewards is to provide a balance between experience points and loot, while two other planned quest givers sit on either end of the spectrum.
I guess this is also the first post detailing some of my plans for the sorts of quests that will be available in the game. Consider that a sneak peek of what's to come. We'll talk more about quests once the actual quest system starts taking shape.
That's about all I've got for now. Obviously there's still more to flesh out with this character than what I've posted, but let's not get too far ahead of ourselves. I'll probably do a "Meet the Knight Part 2" when he is finally in the game and his design is solidified. Lots of work to do before then, though, and we've got a handful of other characters to meet in the mean time.
