Adventures in AR: Meet the Explorer
Here we go again. NPC numero dos:
The explorer is the second quest giver planned for ARventure. Quests given by the explorer will deal with locating points of interest in the local area based off hints. Unlike other quests, the player will not be given a marker for their destination and will instead have to find it by proximity or by identifying the correct location among several options.
Obviously, these won't be the most exciting quests. The quests will be a simple and straightforward way to get some experience points. These quests will also serve as an example of the kind of quests that players can make.
Creating these quests will be fairly simple. Mapzen's Points of Interest layer has a whole lot of values, such as zoos, schools, malls, and libraries. All I have to do is come up with some medieval sort of names for the locations and use them for hints. For instance, if the quest is to find a library, the explorer may say he's looking for a 'temple of knowledge.' It will just be a matter of picking out common, but noteworthy types of locations for the quests. That way, anyone who knows the area well enough should be able to suss out where they need to go and actually feel some accomplishment from finding it.
As with the knight, the explorer isn't fully fleshed out or finalized, but it's a good start. The quests he gives will likely be the simplest in the game, and will probably be the first quests I actually implement. That is, once I get the quest system developed...
