2019 Update
Here we go again, with another update after a few months of radio silence. I'm sure you've been wondering where I've been and what I've been up to. The answer, in typical fashion, is not a whole lot that has anything to do with this blog.
In my last post, I was a bit cavalier about a new development philosophy and all these mini-projects that I was going to be working on. And I did genuinely start poking at some ideas, but nothing really stuck. Even my "momentum" project didn't get off the ground. But all is not lost! The funny thing is, I've actually been scratching my programming itch at work much more than before. As you might recall, my job description does not involve programming at all, but I do a bit of scripting in the workplace to make my life easier. Lately, my coding endeavors have gotten a bit more involved than basic command lists. I've built some interactive tools and I've even learned a bit about developing extensions for Chrome to improve the web-based tools I have to regularly use.
But enough stalling, by now you're probably dying to know where that leave us and this wonderful blog. First and foremost, expect more Scripts in the Workplace posts. We've only looked at one script so far and I've got another 7 or so that are substantial enough to warrant covering. I'm going to shoot for a post every other week, during my off weekends. Baby steps at first, and we'll ramp up if I can get into the groove of it. In the meantime, I need to revisit my 3 Pillars philosophy. While a nice idea, I'm just blowing smoke if I can't commit to it. I do at least want to get my development momentum going again, but rapid prototyping and trying out new tools might fall by the wayside. On the plus side, doing more coding at my day job has allowed me to improve my work-life balance a bit without guilt tripping myself into chipping away at a project I'm not committed to. Getting out more and doing things has been great.
That's about it for now. As I said, look forward to a new Scripts in the Workplace post at the start of February and hopefully another one will follow later that month. If we're really lucky, there might even be two more the next month! Stay tuned.
